Sgonico ( Slovenian Zgonik , German Sgonegg ) is a municipality with 2030 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region . Sgonico is best known for its Grotta Gigante , which was included in the Guinness Book of Records in 1995 as the largest underground cave . The cave is 65 meters wide, 280 meters long and 107 meters high.

The municipality of Sgonico consists of the localities Borgo Grotta Gigante, Bristie, Campo Sacro, Colludrozza, Devincina, Gabrovizza, Rupinpiccolo, Sagrado, Sales, Samatorza and Stazione di Prosecco.

The neighboring communities of Sgonico are Duino-Aurisina ( Devin Nabrežina ), Monrupino ( Repentabor ) and Trieste as well as the Slovenian Sesana ( Sežana ).
