Abbazia Santa Maria in Sylvis (Santa Maria di Sesto)

The large abbey, of which some parts of the building and the cloister are no longer preserved, is a heavily fortified monastery complex. Numerous finds prove that the place is of Roman origin. The Benedictine monastery was founded by the Lombards princes Marco, Erfo and Anto (sons of Duke Peter and his wife Piltrudis) around 741. The heyday of the monastery lasted until the 14th century, in 1440 the abbey fell to the Republic of Venice and was administered as a commander . Other religious orders followed the Benedictines . In 1787 the property and its rights were auctioned. Today the monastery is a parish and since 1921 has been allowed to be called "Abbazia" again.
The gate tower of the facility goes on the 10/11. Century back and is the only surviving of the original seven defense towers. Inside the complex is the Romanesque monastery chancellery and the campanile from the 11th century. The abbot's residence (16th century) on the right now serves as the town hall . An intermediate loggia from the 12th century and other components frame a vestibule , which is followed by the atrium in front of the church. An outside staircase from the 8th century leads to the large bedroom for pilgrims via the vestibule and atrium. Above the portal to the vestibule, a 12th century fresco shows the archangel Gabriel in a lunette , next to it Saint Benedict . A " Madonna Enthroned between John the Baptist and Peter " from the 14th century adorns the side wall of the loggia. The frescoes inside the loggia (1312-1320) depict scenes from the song of Roland . 1460-1490, the walls of the vestibule were painted with frescoes in the tradition of Fra Angelico . The adjoining atrium, divided into three parts by pillars, also contains frescoes, including the “Encounter between the Living and the Dead” from 1350. To the left and right of the portal to the church, “The Incredible Thomas ” and “The Saints Augustine and Ambrosius ”. The Ottonian church building is a three-aisled basilica with alternating columns . The arched upper clad windows are very high, the roof structure is open. The presbytery with the three apses in the east is raised and lies above a three-aisled crypt with largely modified capitals , originally from the 10th century. The column bases and stone benches on the walls date from the time it was built. In the center is the Lombard sarcophagus of St. Anastasia made of marble with relief decoration . In the left apse, a Lombard marble relief from the 14th century depicts the Annunciation . The church interior was originally completely painted, but only a few paintings have survived. In the choir, in particular, there are significant frescoes that were executed by two of Giotto's collaborators and a few assistants in the first half of the 14th century. They depict scenes from the lives of Peter, John and Paul , the Lignum Vitae of St. Bonaventure , the “Coronation of Mary”, the “Annunciation to the Shepherds” and the “Birth of Christ”.
