Montenars ( Friulian Montenars , Slovene : Gorjani ) is a northeastern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia with 496 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). The municipality is located about 22 kilometers north-northwest of Udine and belongs to the Comunità Montana del Gemonese, Canal del Ferro e Val Canale .
Attractions
In the 19th century, Montenars was a bird catcher stronghold . The place is under a migratory bird route. Attempts were made to catch the animals with more than 50 specially built systems, the so-called Roccoli . They were considered a delicacy. Bird trapping is now banned in Friuli Venezia Giulia . Four Roccoli have been preserved and freely accessible to commemorate the tradition.

Montenars has had an intra-Italian partnership with the municipality of Arezzo in the province of Arezzo since 1977 .
