The Monte Toc

The municipality of Erto e Casso (Furlanisch Nert e Cjas ) is located in the north-eastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . It is located north of Pordenone and has 369 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The community consists of the two eponymous towns, Erto and Casso. Erto is the valley location for ascents of Monte Duranno and the Cima dei Preti .

The neighboring communities are Cimolais , Claut , Longarone ( BL ), Ospitale di Cadore (BL), Perarolo di Cadore (BL), Pieve d'Alpago (BL) and Soverzene (BL).

Annual events

Every year at Easter there is a scenic presentation of the Passion of Christ in Erto.

The Passion Play has been played for over 400 years and was not performed once, namely in 1964.

Vajont disaster

Late in the evening of October 9, 1963, the neighboring and central town of Longarone was completely destroyed by the Vajont disaster, and almost the entire local population was killed. The backwater of the mountain masses that had slipped into the reservoir - the dam wall remained intact - also killed numerous people in the (Erto) valley behind it (orographically in front of it, above).

A modern visitor center in Erto documents the disaster.

Famous pepole

Erto is the hometown of the alpinist, wood sculptor and writer Mauro Corona (* 1950), who is particularly well known in Italy for his autobiographical short stories, in which he also deals with the disaster at Vajont.
