At 2652  m slm, Monte Duranno is the second highest mountain in the Southern Carnic Alps after the Cima dei Preti , which are also known as the Friulian Dolomites in the local area . Like the neighboring Cima dei Preti, Monte Duranno lies on the border of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The massif separates the Piave valley from the Cimoliana valley .

The crossing of the Cima dei Preti / Monte Duranno massif is one of the two most difficult stages in the ascent of the Dolomites high path number 6. The high path is mostly taken in a north-south direction, so the east side of the Cima dei Preti and im Connection crosses the east side of Monte Duranno. This is followed by climbing the Durano saddle before trekkers reach the Rifugio Maniago hut . The paths in that massif are partly very exposed and secured by wire ropes. The hiking guides advise against an inspection in bad weather. The passage of the Cima dei Preti / Monte Duranno massif is also extremely long and is made more difficult by the fact that there are no water points in the corresponding section during the typical inspection time (June to September), which is why the required water provisions must be taken in advance.

The normal route to the summit begins in the mountain village of Erto at 778 m and initially leads north through the Val Zemola to the Rifugio Maniago hut (1730 m). From there it goes east to the Durannosattel, which is reached at an altitude of 2217 meters. As a result, the saddle sloping to the south is used. Climbing points of difficulty II have to be mastered on the tour . The literature gives the total duration as about six and a half hours. The view includes Antelao and Monte Pelmo in the north-west, the Bosconero group in the west and views of the valley into the Piave Valley and the Valle del Boite .
