Valle del Boite

The Valle del Boite ( Italian for Boitetal ; Ladin Val de la Guoite ) is a side valley of the Cadore in the Dolomites in Italy . It is entirely in the province of Belluno and takes its name from the Boite River that runs through it . The most important and well-known place in the valley is Cortina d'Ampezzo . The area around the village is sometimes referred to as the Valle d'Ampezzo . The valley encloses the Antelao in the south and is framed by several of the most prominent mountains and mountain ranges in the Dolomites.

Geographical location

The Valle del Boite is located in the far north of the province of Belluno in the Veneto region . It borders South Tyrol in the area of the upper reaches of the Boite . The valley follows the course of the river Boite: between its source at the foot of the Col dles Sciores , a neighboring summit of the Seekofel , and the village of Vodo di Cadore, the valley runs in a north-west-south-east direction, on the lower reaches then in a west-east direction.

The Valle del Boite has numerous side valleys, most of which lead down from the mountains across the direction of the main valley. Most of them feed the main river Boite with their streams. The side valleys to the west of the river bank are particularly heavily forested.

Communities

The main town of the valley is Cortina d'Ampezzo. The world famous ski resort has a little over 6000 inhabitants. There are also the municipalities of Valle di Cadore , Vodo di Cadore , Borca di Cadore and San Vito di Cadore .

The valley is framed by several of the most famous mountains and mountain ranges in the Dolomites. These include Monte Cristallo , Tofane , Antelao , Sorapiss and Monte Pelmo . Four of the six highest mountain groups in the Dolomites border the valley: Antelao (3264 m, second highest mountain in the Dolomites), Tofane ( Tofana di Mezzo , 3244 m, rank 3), Cristallo (3211 m, rank 4) and Sorapiss (3205 m, rank 6). The summits of Monte Pelmo (3168 m) and the Hohen Gaisl (3146 m), which is located northeast of the valley head, are also higher than 3000 meters .

Other well-known mountains (all higher than 2000 meters) are the Monte Rite , on which there is a former fortress from the mountain war of 1915–1918 , and Cinque Torri , Monte Averau , Croda di Lago on the western border of the valley.

Antelao, Sorapiss and Cristallo have smaller glaciers .

traffic

Apart from the first five kilometers of the course of the river (and thus of the valley), the Strada Statale 51 di Alemagna runs parallel to the Boite river and thus almost through the entire valley. The state road, which used to be an important trade route between Venice , Innsbruck and Augsburg , changes its course a few kilometers north of Cortina near the ruins of Hubertus Castle: instead of heading north, it heads east from there to beyond the Passo Cimabanche (1530 m) into the Höhlenstein valley where the road runs north again. The second state road in the valley runs in a west-east direction and thus crosses the Valle del Boite: From the Falzarego pass (2105 m), the Strada Statale 48 delle Dolomiti , also known as the Great Dolomite Road, leads to Cortina. From there the SS 48 runs over the Passo Tre Croci .

In the direction of the southeastern Val di Zoldo there is a connection via the Passo Cibiana . The connection is via the Strada provinciale 347. A provincial road branches off the SS 48 west of Cortina, which leads over the Passo di Giau into Val Codalonga and the town of Selva di Cadore .

tourism

The mountains around the Valle del Boite have been part of the Dolomites World Heritage since 2009 (groups 1 and 5).

The mountains around the Valle del Boite have been part of the Dolomites World Heritage since 2009 . In the west of the valley are the groups around Monte Pelmo and Croda da Lago , in the east the largest contiguous area of the World Heritage, including Antelao, Cristallo and other peaks. The northern part of the Valle del Boite belongs to the Parco naturale regional delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo (Regional Nature Park Ampezzo Dolomites ). It was established in 1990 and covers 11,200 hectares or 112 square kilometers.

The area is popular with both summer and winter vacationers. Mountaineers and trekkers are common in the summer months. Five of the ten high-altitude trails in the Dolomites lead through the mountains . The Dolomites high path number 1, also known as the classic path , leads through the group of mountains in the west (Tofane and Monte Pelmo) . The mountains and mountain ranges Cristallo, Sorapiss, Monte Pelmo and Monte Rite are crossed by the high trail number 3, also called the path of the chamois . Reinhold Messner has built one of five Messner Mountain Museums in a former fort on Monte Rite . The high trails 4 and 5 lead past the Antelao, high trail number four also through the rocky world of Sorapiss. The latter high-altitude trails end in the Valle del Boite, in the village of Pieve di Cadore. The only high-altitude path in the Dolomites, number 9, which runs in a west-east direction, crosses the valley.

Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the 1956 Winter Games. The infrastructure is still in use. These include the Olimpia delle Tofane slope , on which Ski World Cup races are still held.
