particularities Highest mountain in the Averau group

The Monte Averau is a 2649 meter high mountain in the mountain group of the same name in the Ampezzaner Dolomites . It is located northwest of the somewhat lower neighboring mountains Monte Nuvolau and Monte Gusela . The mountain group lies between the Falzarego Pass and the Passo di Giau in the border area of the municipalities of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Colle Santa Lucia . Routes lead up the mountain from both passes. To the northeast are the Cinque Torri .

Averau group from above the Passo di Giau: Monte Averau is to the left of Monte Gusela (in front) and Monte Nuvolau

The Rifugio Averau , a mountain hut, is located southeast of the summit at an altitude of 2416 meters . From both the south and the north, chairlifts lead close to the summit.

The all-round view from the summit of Monte Averau includes the west-south-west of the Marmolada glacier , the Col di Lana in the west and the Sella group behind it and the Tofane in the north . In the east, beyond Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Valle del Boite, the Cristallo group and Sorapiss are visible, in the south the Civetta . The distant view in the north extends as far as the Austrian main Alpine ridge . The summit is easy to reach compared to other famous scenic mountains. The normal route leads from Passo di Falzarego in the north to the summit in around two hours. It starts at a parking lot on Strada Statale 48 delle Dolomiti . A “short, moderately difficult via ferrata” has to be mastered before the summit.

The Dolomites high path number 1, also known as the classic path , leads along Monte Averau, one variant includes the path to the hut with a subsequent descent on the east side of the mountain and crossing the Via Ferrata on Monte Gusela.
