It is located between the slightly higher neighboring mountains Monte Averau and Monte Gusela . Routes lead up the mountain from both passes.

Rifugio Nuvolau

The Rifugio Nuvolau is located on the summit of Monte Nuvolau . Already laid out in 1883, it was the oldest refuge in the mountain area of Cortina d'Ampezzo. It was built with the help of a donation from the Saxon officer Richard von Meerheimb , which he had made in Cortina d'Ampezzo as thanks for his healing from a lung disease. For this reason it was initially called "Sachsendank". Due to its extreme summit location and the associated lack of roadways, the hut does not offer the same level of comfort as many other alpine huts. There is no hot water or showers at the Rifugio Nuvolau. It is supplied by material cable car from the Rifugio Cinque Torri in the northeast, accessible by road on the mountain of the same name . The Nuvolauhütte was an important lookout point during the mountain war of 1915–1918 .

The all-round view from the summit of Monte Nuvolau includes the west-south-west of the Marmolada glacier , the Col di Lana in the west and the Sella group behind it and the Tofane in the north . In the east, beyond Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Cristallo group and Sorapiss are visible. The distant view in the north extends as far as the Austrian main Alpine ridge . The summit is easy to reach compared to other famous scenic mountains. The normal route leads from Passo di Giau to the south in about one and a half hours to the summit. From the north, access begins at a car park on Strada Statale 48 delle Dolomiti . From there a chair lift leads to the Rifugio Scoiattolli at an altitude of 2225 meters. The missing 350 meters can be mastered in about an hour and a quarter.

The Dolomites high path number 1, also known as the classic path , leads along Monte Nuvolau, one variant includes the path to the hut with a subsequent descent on the east side of the mountain.
