The Antelao ( Ladin Nantelou ) is 3264 m slm the highest mountain of the Ampezzo Dolomites and second highest in the Dolomites at all. When the weather is good, Monte Antelao is clearly visible from the Rive in Trieste .
It is located in Cadore ( Belluno Province ), northeast of the Boite Valley . As the highest pinnacle of the eastern Dolomites, the Antelao is a rather untypical mountain for the Dolomites. While there are closed massifs and high plateaus elsewhere , the Antelao forms an isolated rock pyramid. With the Pelmo towering up to the west , it forms the entrance gate from the Piave Valley into the Valle del Boite.
The normal route ( points II ) leads over the north ridge from the northern Valle d'Oten. The slab shots of the north ridge are dangerous because of the scree lying on top, especially when there is snow and icing.
