history
The Romans subjugated the Cadore in the 2nd century BC. Chr. And annexed the region X. et Histria Venetia on.
Since 973 the Hochstift Freising owned the county Cadore ; it came temporarily to Carinthia , then from 1077 for a long time to the Prince Patriarchate of Aquileia . The internal autonomy and the republican constitution of the valley were recognized by Charles of Moravia in 1338 through the Statuti Cadorini and lasted until 1805.
After the Prince Patriarchate of Aquileia was dissolved (1420), the Republic of Venice took on the role of ruler. In 1508 and 1509, the Venetians, together with forces from Cadore, defeated Emperor Maximilian I , who wanted to incorporate the area. In 1511, however, he finally managed to occupy Cortina d'Ampezzo in the far north of the Cadore , which remained with Austria until 1919 and has retained its own identity to this day.
The rest of Cadore remained with the Republic of Venice until the Napoleonic Wars . At the Congress of Vienna , the whole of Veneto and Lombardy were added to the Austrian Empire, against which popular resistance soon arose. During the Risorgimento , in May 1848 , a popular uprising against Austrian rule took place in Cadore , led by Pietro Calvi .
During the First World War , Cadore was the scene of fierce fighting between Austrians and Italians ( Alpine front ).
During fascism and z. Even in the following years, the Cadore (which had always enjoyed a certain autonomy as part of the Venice Republic ) suffered from the political centralism of Italy . In the course of regionalization , the Veneto region was again formed , but without being given a certain degree of independence within it.
Because of the pronounced differences between the parts of the country on the plains and in the mountains and also for financial reasons, a number of municipalities in Cadore are in favor of joining the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol . There were also initiatives for a Statute of Autonomy for Cadore within the Veneto region. An extension of the financial sovereignty of the Italian regions with normal statutes (federalismo fiscale) and a special position of the Cadore within Veneto are considered the most likely solution.
Gelatieri Valley
The Val di Cadore is also known as the "Valley of the Gelatieri ". The majority of Italian ice cream parlor owners in Germany and Austria come from here. They emigrated since the 1920s to sell ice cream in the summer and to spend the winter in their homeland.
economy
In the last few decades the Cadore has developed into a rather wealthy area, in which numerous industrial companies (including eyewear manufacturers such as Luxottica ) have settled. Tourism and winter sports also play an important role.
