The Boite ( La Guoite in Ladin ) is a right tributary of the Piave in the Dolomites ( Belluno Province , Veneto region / Italy ). Over a length of 42 kilometers, its river bed reaches an area of 396 km². This is explained by its strong widening and branching in places between sand and gravel banks. It is the second largest tributary of the Piave after the Cordevole .

The landscape through which the Boite and the upper Piave flow is called Cadore , the river valley alone is called the Valle del Boite .

Landscape / course

The headwaters of the Boite are located above the Malga Ra Stua , approx. 6 km north of Cortina d'Ampezzo in the direction of Toblach in the Parco Regionale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo near the Hohe Gaisl massif . Several brooks unite at this height of approx. 1,800 m, which is called Campo Croce , to form the Boite, which at Col Rosa (2,146 m) has the character of a torrent.

The Boite then flows through a valley floor between wooded slopes, behind which the rocky Dolomite groups rise to heights of over 3,000 m. On the left side of the river valley (northeast) are Monte Cristallo , Pomagagnon , Sorapiss and Antelao , on the right (southwest) Croda da Lago , Monte Pelmo and in the area of the mouth of the Sasso di Bosconero .

The river flows through the communities

before it flows into the Piave at Perarolo di Cadore. On the way it takes in numerous torrents; the largest is the Torrente Rite at Cibiana di Cadore . There are small reservoirs near Vodo and Valle.

Numerous hiking trails run above the river valley, including a. the Dolomites high path no.3 .
