The Hohe Gaisl (also spelled Geisel , Italian Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo ) is a 3146 m high mountain in the Dolomites .
Location and surroundings
The Hohe Gaisl is the highest peak in the Braies Dolomites , as well as a mountain range that forms the border ridge between South Tyrol and the province of Belluno . In the north the massif descends to the Pragser Tal , in the south and west to the Valle del Boite , in the east to the Höhlensteintal . Administratively, the mountain is divided between the municipalities of Braies , Cortina d'Ampezzo and Toblach . The slopes sloping down to the South Tyrolean side are protected in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park .
The summit of the Hohen Gaisl is the southeast corner pillar of a mountain range that roughly extends from northwest to southeast and is steadily rising. The closest peaks to the northwest are the Hohe Schlechtgaisl ( 2967 m ) and the Kleine Gaisl ( 2860 m ). It is easiest to access from the east, from the crossing of the Gemärkpass and from the Plätzwiese high plateau .
Alpinism
Due to its loneliness and the fragility of the rock, the Hohe Gaisl is already the most demanding three-thousand-meter peak in the Dolomites on its normal route . It was first ascent in 1865 by Paul Grohmann , Angelo Pizzo and Fulgentio Dimai, but they only reached a preliminary summit. The main summit was not climbed until five years later by Santo Siorpaes with escorts.
