The Plätzwiese ( Italian Prato Piazza ) is a much-visited high plateau in the Braies Dolomites in South Tyrol in the Fanes-Sennes- Braies Nature Park . The approximately 2000  m high plateau at the southern end of the Braies Valley is surrounded by the mountains of the Hohen Gaisl , the Drei Zinnen , the Tofana and the Monte Cristallo . The plateau can be reached via a toll road from Braies in the north or via a non-public road from Schluderbach in the south. Among other things, it is the starting point for a hike to the Dürrenstein and the Helltaler Bad . The Berggasthof Plätzwiese, the Hotel Hohe Gaisl and the Dürrensteinhütte provide accommodation. The externally restored Austro-Hungarian defense system Plätzwiese is located on the Plätzwiese .

The Plätzwiese is also a popular excursion destination in Alta Pusteria in winter . Cross-country skiing and tobogganing are offered here at this time. The hike to the Heimkehrerkreuz on the 2307  m high Strudelkopf is also possible in winter. It takes about 40 minutes from the Dürrensteinhütte to reach this summit cross. The Dürrensteinhütte and the Hotel Hohe Gaisl are also open in winter.

history

Already in documents of the late 12th century, including a privilege of Emperor Frederick I of 1187, the Plätzwiese is mentioned as an alpine pasture area owned by the Hochstift Freising or its subsidiary, Stift Innichen - the corresponding forms of name are " Pletces " or " Pleces ". This indicates an early agricultural importance and use of the mountain areas, which became the object of the high medieval imperial policy in the Alpine region .
