The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park ( Italian Parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies , Ladin Parch Natural Fanes-Senes-Braies ) is a regional park in the South Tyrolean Dolomites ( Italy ). It was founded in 1980 and covers an area of 25,453 ha, divided into the communities Abtei , Enneberg , Olang , Braies , Toblach and Wengen .

Expansion and habitats

The nature park extends into the South Tyrolean parts of the Braies Dolomites and the Fanes group . It is bordered in the north by the Pustertal , in the west by the Gadertal and in the east by the Höhlensteintal , where it connects directly to the Drei Zinnen nature park . In the south it ends on the border with the province of Belluno . The area is characterized by extensive alpine pastures and plateaus, which include the eponymous Fanes and Senes , as well as the Plätzwiese . These plateaus are framed by numerous mountains; the highest peak in the park is the Hohe Gaisl ( 3146  m ) in the southeast. The largest standing waters in the area are the Pragser Wildsee and the Toblacher See .

A geological peculiarity of the nature park is the strong characterization by typical karst forms such as channel and cleft carts, crevices and sinkholes , which occur on the plateaus of Fanes and Senes. At lower altitudes there are coniferous forests, which mainly consist of spruce and in higher areas are interspersed with larch and stone pine . In the area of the tree line , mountain pines begin to grow . A large part of the area consists of alpine pastures and meadows. The limestone lawns located at altitudes between 2000 and 2800  m , which are composed of blue grasses and evergreen sedge , are characteristic.
