The Schlern-Rosengarten nature park ( Parco Naturale Sciliar-Catinaccio in Italian ) is a regional park in the South Tyrolean Dolomites ( Italy ). It was founded in 1974 and covers an area of 7291 hectares, divided into the communities of Castelrotto , Tiers and Völs am Schlern .

Expansion and habitats

The park is located in the western Dolomites , about 10 km east of Bolzano . The heart of the nature reserve is the Schlern group with the eponymous Schlern ( 2563  m ). The Alpe di Siusi extends north of the Schlern- Roterdspitze - Rosszähne mountain range , the southern parts of which lie within the park boundaries. In the west towards the Eisack Valley , the nature park falls to the low mountain ranges of the Schlern area, where u. a. the Völser Weiher is located in the southwest of the Tierser Valley . In the southeast - on the border with Trentino  - the park almost completely encompasses the South Tyrolean part of the Rosengarten , in which the Rosengartenspitze ( 2981  m ) and the Kesselkogel ( 3004  m ) rise as the highest peaks.

In the lower part of the nature park, mixed coniferous forests of different types are predominant. The Alpe di Siusi is characterized by a carpet of alpine meadows , heather and spring swamps . A large part of the park consists of sparsely vegetated dolomite rocks and debris cones .

History and facilities

The Sciliar Nature Park, founded in 1974, was the first nature park designated by the State of South Tyrol. Only the Stilfserjoch National Park, established in 1951, is an older, extensive nature reserve in South Tyrol . In 2003, the nature park was expanded significantly with the addition of the rose garden and subsequently renamed accordingly. In 2009 it was recognized by UNESCO as part of the Dolomites World Heritage .
