The Luxottica SpA was an Italian company based in Milan and the world's largest eyewear manufacturer . The main products were sunglasses and prescription glasses frames. Luxottica operated in the design, manufacture, wholesale and retail businesses and operated in 130 countries worldwide.

Luxottica shares were traded on the Borsa Italiana and, from 1990, in New York . After the merger with Essilor in 2018, the new company operates under the name EssilorLuxottica .

Company history

Luxottica was founded in Agordo in 1961 by the Milanese entrepreneur Leonardo Del Vecchio . In the following years, several other eyewear manufacturers settled in the Cadore Valley , which is why the local distretto industriale is seen as an Italian eyewear stronghold.

From 1995 onwards, Luxottica bought a number of US companies and brands, including Ray-Ban von Bausch & Lomb , LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut International and Oakley (in 2007), followed by Oliver Peoples in 2009. At the beginning of 2013, Luxottica also took over the French eyewear manufacturer Alain Mikli . In January 2014, a luxury group called Atelier was founded with the brands alain mikli, Oliver Peoples, Mosley Tribes, Paul Smith, starck eyes and Stella McCartney, which is based in Paris, the former headquarters of alain mikli international.

The merger between Luxottica and the French lens specialist Essilor, announced in January 2017, was completed in October 2018. The company now operates under the name EssilorLuxottica . Luxottica founder Leonardo Del Vecchio took over the chairmanship after the merger.
