history

Domenico Dolce was born on August 13, 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily . Stefano Gabbana was born in Milan on November 14, 1962. Dolce was already designing and tailoring his own clothes at the age of six. The two first met over the phone when Dolce applied for a job at the Gabbana fashion house. Gabbana recognized the talent in Dolce and took him under his wing after the employment. He introduced him to the typical processes in a fashion house and showed him how new designs are created. A short time later, Gabbana had to take on the mandatory 18-month military service , but immediately after his return in 1982, the two founded a joint design consultancy.

The designer duo's first collection was presented alongside five other new Italian labels at the Milan Fashion Week in October 1985 . She was called Real Women . The next collection appeared in 1986 and the first shop was opened in the same year. In 1987 they presented their own range of knitwear and in 1989 the product range was expanded to include underwear and swimwear. In 1990 they presented their first collection for men. In 1991, it received the Woolmark Award as the most innovative men's collection of the year.

They found their first international recognition when Madonna wore a gem-studded corset and jacket by Dolce & Gabbana at her premiere of Truth or Dare : In Bed with Madonna at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990. In 1993, the duo designed more together with Madonna than 1,500 costumes for their international tour Girlie Show to promote their album Erotica from 1992. In 1994 the company launched the second key product line - D&G, which appeals to a younger target group.

In the 1990s, the duo expanded their market position after Dolce & Gabbana signed a deal with the Kashiyama Group in 1989 and opened the first boutique in Japan. The first women's perfume called “Dolce & Gabbana Parfum” was introduced in 1992 and in 1993 received an award from the Perfume Academy as the best women's fragrance of the year. The first men's fragrance, “Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme”, was named the best men's fragrance of the year by the same academy in 1995.

In further collaboration with Madonna, Dolce & Gabbana designed costumes for the international Drowned World Tour in 2001, which promoted the 2000 album Music . They also designed the costumes for Missy Elliott , Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige's international tours . In the 2000s, the duo created many more costumes for various artists such as B. for the tour Showgirl Homecoming by Kylie Minogue . Madonna was also part of the Dolce & Gabbana advertising campaigns in 2010. In 2012, D&G was merged with Dolce & Gabbana to strengthen the core product line. A 2005 article by The New Yorker said: "Dolce and Gabbana will be in the 2000s what Prada was in the 1990s and Armani in the 1980s - gli stilisti whose sensibility has shaped a whole decade." In 1997 Dolce & Gabbana also received personal awards and were named Designer of the Year by FHM . In 2003 GQ Magazine named Dolce & Gabbana one of the "Men of the Year".
