definition

Retail store

The fashion house as a retail shop usually has a large sales area, like a department store, and offers a very deep range , like a specialty shop. Often a wide range of products from various brand manufacturers and fashion companies is offered in such a clothing store . Such a fashion house is limited to the various product groups of clothing , in addition, shoes and accessories (brooches, belts, etc.) are often offered as supplementary product groups. In individual cases, in addition to the core area mentioned, completely different product groups are also sold, but this additional offer cannot take up a large proportion of the sales area, as otherwise the fashion store can be described more as a classic department store.

In the past, “fashion house” was often used to refer to specialist textile shops, which are now more commonly referred to as “boutique”. Compared to a fashion house, boutiques are significantly smaller and offer a less wide and / or deep range. Fashion houses often have more than one sales floor. Due to the flow of customers required for this , fashion houses are usually located in the inner cities of medium-sized and large cities or in shopping centers close to the city. In small towns, however, fashion houses are less common. A fashion house can be run as a sole proprietorship ( e.g. Lodenfrey or Hirmer in Munich ) or as a chain (e.g. Peter Hahn ).

Among fashion houses there are also houses that are specially geared towards certain customer groups, such as fashion houses only for men ( e.g. Eckerle Herrenmoden from Munich) or women ( e.g. AppelrathCüpper from Cologne ). Companies that operate around 20 or more fashion houses in the form of a fashion chain in Germany are, for example, C&A , Peek & Cloppenburg and SinnLeffers . Textile trading companies with a network of their own branches such as H&M , Zara , Mango , Zero or Orsay are usually not referred to as fashion houses because they only offer specially designed or manufactured items and not a wide range of fashion manufacturers. Some outstanding fashion houses are e.g. B. Breuninger and Engelhorn (Germany), Selfridges ( Great Britain ), Printemps and Galeries Lafayette ( France ) or Bergdorf Goodman , Nordstrom , Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue ( USA ), but their range mostly includes additional product groups such as perfume and cosmetics , and should therefore be more correctly designated as department stores.

Fashion manufacturer

Based on the English term fashion house or the French expression maison de couture (both literally: fashion house ), large fashion companies, especially internationally renowned fashion companies (e.g. Chanel , Dior , Jil Sander , Burberry , Armani , Versace , Ralph Lauren ) are also established in Germany etc.), referred to as fashion houses.
