The Selfridges department store chain has four branches in Great Britain, in addition to the one in Oxford Street in London , others in the Exchange and Trafford Center in Manchester and in Birmingham ( Bullring ). In Oxford Street alone, the department store has around 17 million customers annually. The closest London Underground station is Bond Street .

history

In 1909 Harry Gordon Selfridge founded his department store, which is still world-famous today, in Oxford Street, London . At that time it got a lot of attention because it was supposed to be a department store for "everyone". The “Soda Fountain” and the “Silence Room” were also famous at the time.
In October 1939, Gordon Selfridge resigned as chairman of the board to take over the presidency. Andrew Holmes, who joined the board in 1935, took over the vacancy.
In the 1940s the small houses were sold to the John Lewis Partnership.
Gordon Selfridge died in 1947.
In the early 1950s, Lord Woolton, then chairman of Lewis' and Selfridge's greatest rivals, took over the department store for £ 3.4 million .
In the 1960s, the owner changed again. Charles Clore and his British Shoe Corporation bought the majority in Lewis' in 1965 for 63 million pounds (adjusted for inflation in today's currency: around 1,227 million euros). The following year the Miss Selfridges chain was opened. Designer brands such as Pierre Cardin are sold .
In 1970 the Selfridges Hotel opened next to the London store.
On December 19, 1974, the department store on Oxford Street was targeted by an IRA bombing. Five people were injured.
In the 1980s, Tim Daniels, formerly Merchandise Director, took over the management.
In 1996 Vittorio Radice was appointed business director. Selfridges was taken over by the Sears Group in 1998 and a new department store opened in the Manchester Trafford Center.
In 2003, the fourth department store was opened in the Bullring in Birmingham. In the same year, the Selfridges chain was taken over by the Canadian entrepreneur Galen Weston .
