life and work

After graduating from high school, Schomburg was with the Air Force for three years , after which he studied business administration at the University of Göttingen . He later worked for Kabelmetall AG in Hanover for seven years as the commercial manager of the foreign systems business.

When he joined Deutsche Messe in 1979, he played a key role in developing the CeBIT section of the Hannover Messe into the largest IT trade fair in the world. That earned him the nickname Mister CeBIT . From 1984 to May 2006 Schomburg was the division manager responsible for CeBIT.

On February 10, 2006, the Financial Times Deutschland reported that Schomburg should give up his post after the CeBIT IT trade fair (March 2006). The newspaper had justified the change with the fact that Schomburg was criticized internally for the considerable decline in exhibitors at CeBIT. The failure of the "CeBIT Home" is also blamed on him. Deutsche Messe initially denied the short-term replacement, and the training of the 20 years younger successor, Dr. Sven Prüser, former project manager at the Berlin IFA , was confirmed and the change was made in May 2006.

In the IT industry, Schomburg was seen as a fair and competent discussion partner. After a short, serious illness, he died at the age of 62. He leaves behind his wife, two of his own and three adopted children.
