history
As early as the spring of 1947, the British occupation authorities announced in the bulletin of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the heading "Miscellaneous":
“Export Fair 1947 Hanover. From August 18 to September 7, 1947 the export fair for the western zones takes place in Hanover. In five exhibition halls with 30,000 m², the German industry shows exportf. Quality products. Stand registrations to: Deutsche Messe- und Exposition-AG, Hannover-Laatzen. "
Within 99 days, the partially destroyed or dismantled factory halls located on the premises of the Hannover Metal Works (MEHA) in Laatzen were prepared for the trade fair. In the last few days before the opening, 4,600 people worked on the site. For example, 250 tons of iron, 2,100 m³ of wood, 90,000 m² of hardboard, 300,000 bricks, 340 tons of cement, 1,000 m³ of gravel, 300 m³ of sand, 10,000 m² of glass and 2,400 m² of roofing felt were used.
On August 16, 1947, the German Exhibition and Exhibition Company Hannover-Laatzen was entered in the commercial register with a share capital of 1.2 million Reichsmarks. Two days later, on Monday, August 18, 1947, the 1947 Hanover Export Fair began . It lasted 21 days and was attended by 736,000 visitors. Orders were only allowed by the specialist audience and only for foreign accounts. 1,934 export contracts were concluded for a total of around 31.6 million US dollars. Foreign visitors came from a total of 53 nations, half of them from overseas.
In the following years, the site and infrastructure were expanded, as was the range of programs. Deutsche Messe experienced the biggest investment boost in its sixty-year history from extensive preparations for the Expo 2000 world exhibition . In the period from 1990 to 2000, more than 800 million euros were expended to expand the Hanover trade fair center in line with the world's fair and at the same time to keep it competitive.
