The Hannover Messe / Laatzen train station is a category 4 train station in Laatzen in the immediate vicinity of the Hannover Exhibition Center . In regular traffic it is mainly served by trains of the Hanover S-Bahn . At major events such as the Hanover Fair , all local and long-distance trains stop here. In 2000, the station in the Alt-Laatzen district replaced the old exhibition station, which was located on a branch line directly at the exhibition center. Operationally it belongs to the Hannover-Wülfel train station.
history
The station was rebuilt on the occasion of the world exhibition Expo 2000 . It replaced the Laatzen stop located at this point , which was built in 1977 as part of the construction of the high-speed line and had replaced the Hanover-Wülfel suburban train station further north in passenger traffic .
From 1953 to 1998, the Hanover-Messe terminus station was used for trade fair traffic, directly at the exhibition grounds, which had also been electrically accessible since March 19, 1971 and was again extensively expanded in 1988.
A Europe-wide implementation competition with urban planning ideas competition was announced for the new train station.
The new station was officially opened on March 22, 2000. The first of two construction phases went into operation in the spring of 1998 after construction work had started in 1996. A total of 200 million euros were invested, 30 new points and 61 additional signals were installed. As part of the Expo 2000 , up to 133,000 travelers per day were expected in 300 travel and 250 S-Bahn trains.
The station hall spans the tracks by means of a 60-meter-long and 36-meter-wide prestressed concrete bridge and is spanned over the entire length with a roof structure made of curved steel bars . Access to the through platforms is via a bridge construction (finger) that also serves as the platform roof and opens up the platform with several exits.
The exhibition station has two long-distance platforms, each 420 meters long and 9 meters wide, on four continuous tracks, as well as a 210-meter long head platform with two tracks for the S-Bahn trains that end here. Two more through tracks of the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg run in the middle of the old route.
During Expo 2000 there was a provisional Terminal B on the existing tracks to the northeast of the station , on whose platform trains to and from the north and east ended and began. The entrances were dismantled again after the expo.
Connections in regular traffic
In regular traffic, the Hannover Messe / Laatzen station has served as the S-Bahn station for the hourly S-Bahn line 4 from Hildesheim via Hannover Messe / Laatzen to Bennemühlen since December 2008 . Before that, there was an hourly regional train on the Hanover – Hildesheim route and a two-hour metronome on the Uelzen – Hanover – Göttingen route.
From December 2017 to December 2019, trains on the Berlin - Frankfurt - Stuttgart route also stopped at this station. Initially the LOC 1818 and LOC 1819 from Locomore , from April 2018 the FLX 10 line from Flixtrain . From June 11 to December 14, 2019, the regional express line RE2 and the S-Bahn HVZ express line S51 also served the Hannover Messe / Laatzen station due to the failure of trains due to construction work . From June 8th to July 13th, 2020 the express line S51 begins and ends in the station due to construction work on the Hanover – Springe line.

Connections in trade fair traffic
During the major trade fairs such as Agritechnica and Hannover Messe , it is also a long-distance train station to enable a direct connection to the exhibition grounds. For example, during CeBIT 2010 up to 72 ICE and 15 IC trains as well as the otherwise passing regional trains on the Hanover – Bad Harzburg (RE 10) and Hanover – Göttingen (RE 2) lines stopped . The S-Bahn line 4 in the direction of Bennemühlen is reinforced every half hour for large trade fairs. The S-Bahn line 8 only runs on such occasions as a transfer-free connection via the main station to Hanover Airport . This service line of the S-Bahn Hanover always had the highest line number during the development of the line network (first S5, then S6, today S8).
The trade fairs during which long-distance trains also stop here include the annual "Hannover Messe" and Domotex trade fairs, as well as the Agritechnica, EuroBLECH , EuroTier , LIGNA and IAA Commercial Vehicles trade fairs every two years .

Transport links
The 340 meters between the train station and the exhibition grounds are bridged with the Skywalk . This is an elevated double tube in which two parallel moving walks and two paths enable a fast and weather-independent pedestrian connection.
The tram lines 1 and 2, as well as the bus lines 340 and 341, are about 200 meters away on Hildesheimer Straße. There is a bus stop (Laatzen / Münchener Straße) for bus line 124 and a long-distance bus stop right at the train station.
