List of train stations in Switzerland |
The Interlaken Ost train station , along with the Interlaken West train station, is the larger of the two train stations in the Bernese municipality of Interlaken . It is served by trains of two different gauges: standard gauge and meter gauge. The station belongs to the Bernese Oberland Railway . This company built its terminus here in 1890, before that Interlaken Zollhaus - as it was called back then - was just an unattended stop.
history
The station was opened on July 1, 1874 by the then Bödelibahn as Interlaken Zollhaus , after it had extended its route from the former Interlaken station (today Interlaken West) to Bönigen. In 1890, Interlaken Zollhaus became the starting point for the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB), a meter-gauge railway to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. In 1893 the western continuation of the Bödelibahn followed along Lake Thun to Thun, so Interlaken was continuously connected to the Swiss railway network.
In 1916, the importance of the Interlaken Ost station as a traffic junction increased again when the last section of the Brünig Railway between Brienz and Interlaken was opened to traffic. The station building that exists today dates from 1917 and was built when the station's function as a junction increased again with the opening of the Brünigbahn. Today the station building is a listed building.
When railway accident in Interlaken on 11 August 1952 met, because of a misunderstanding, a freight car with a group of Bönigen -down passenger train together. Despite the relatively slow speed, four travelers were killed and at least ten seriously injured because the old wooden wagons could not withstand the impact. In 1969, BLS ceased passenger services on the Interlaken Ost – Bönigen line. The former track system of the Bödelibahn still serves as a feeder to the BLS main workshop in Bönigen.
In 2002 the station square was redesigned and in 2007 the Interlaken Ost station was upgraded to a full node. In 2012, the municipality of Interlaken won the "FLUX - Golden Transport Knot" award with the Interlaken Ost transport hub on the grounds that the unification of public transport, motorized individual transport and non-motorized traffic on the area of the train station is exemplary.
investment
The station complex comprises eight platform tracks that are attached to five platforms. In the Interlaken Ost train station, three railway lines are linked, which end or start here, with no through trains. From the west, the standard gauge Thunerseebahn runs with a voltage of 15,000 volts alternating current into the station, which, however, is not a terminus station : The through-going passenger traffic of the Bödelibahn to Bönigen was discontinued in 1969 - since then all trains have ended in Interlaken Ost - but are located the BLS workshop continues to be in Bönigen, so that the route will continue to be used. Although the Brünigbahn and the BOB have the same gauge, they are operated with different traction current systems : The Brünig line, which is now used by the Zentralbahn, has a voltage of 15,000 volts alternating current due to its SBB past, the BOB routes are in the direction of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Powered by 1500 volts direct current.
Because of these differences, every railway company has its own tracks, and there is no alternating feed between the different tracks. There are track connections between the Zentralbahn and the BOB, which in the past were mainly used to exchange wagons, but are no longer used today.
traffic
The station is served by five railway companies, the SBB , the BLS , the Zentralbahn , the BOB and the DB , the latter operating its trains on the Swiss section together with the SBB.
Long-distance transport
The station is served once or twice an hour by SBB InterCity trains, which run four times a day as an ICE to Berlin. In addition, there are hourly InterRegio connections of the Zentralbahn to Lucerne and a few daily Golden Pass Panoramic trains of the BLS to Zweisimmen. Direct train connections to Zurich HB existed until 2007, but can no longer be operated due to the lack of timetable routes in connection with the Lötschberg base tunnel and the Interlaken Ost full node introduced in 2007 because the stay in Bern and Spiez would be too short to take up connections. Instead, these trains also go to Basel.

Regional traffic
BLS, BOB and Zentralbahn operate in regional traffic. The BOB runs every half hour with wing trains that are divided into two parts in Zweilütschinen to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. No exact hourly intervals are offered in traffic towards Spiez, instead two overlapping two-hour intervals that are a few minutes apart. The regional train of the zb to Meiringen condenses the timetable together with the InterRegio in about half an hour on the Bernese side.

In addition, the Harderbahn , a funicular to the Harder Kulm, begins not far from the Ostbahnhof .
