The Thunerseebahn (TSB) is a former railway company in Switzerland that existed from 1890 to 1913. Thunerseebahn is also the name of the railway line along the left bank of Lake Thun from Thun via Spiez to Interlaken.

history

Tender locomotive Ed 3/3 No. 2 of the Thunerseebahn, built in 1892
In 1899 and 1901 the TSB procured two powerful and economical four-coupler steam locomotives E4 (later Ec 4/5 ) 11-12 and Ec 4/5 13-14 from the SLM in Winterthur . The composite locomotives of type Consolidation could thanks to the front curve moving barrel axis operate at higher speed.

In 1890 the Thunerseebahn received a concession for a railway line from Scherzligen near Thun via Spiez to Därligen . As a replacement for the previous railway ferry, this route connected the end point of the Centralbahn in Thun with the starting point of the Bödelibahn to Interlaken . The latter had already been opened in 1872, but initially in isolated operation.

On June 1, 1893, the company started operations and leased the continuation from Därligen to Interlaken Ost from the Bödelibahn. On January 1, 1900, it took over the Bödelibahn completely, from now on the trains to Bönigen were also operated by the TSB. The Spiez-Frutigen-Bahn , the first stage of the Lötschberg line , opened on July 25, 1901, was under their management .

The railway company subsequently merged with the "Steamship Company for Lake Thun and Lake Brienz". On January 1, 1913, it merged with the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway and merged with it.

On May 31, 1969, passenger traffic was discontinued on the Interlaken Ost – Bönigen section of the former Bödelibahn. Part of the route has been retained as the entrance to the main BLS workshop in Bönigen.

Accidents on the Thun – Bönigen route

On August 11, 1952, a group of freight wagons collided with a passenger train at Interlaken Ost station due to a misunderstanding . Despite the relatively low speed, four travelers were killed and at least ten seriously injured because the old wooden wagons could not withstand the impact. → Main article: Interlaken railway accident

On May 17, 2006, a service train with non-functioning brakes collided with construction wagons on the route after an uncontrolled journey near Dürrenast . Three employees on the train were killed. In order to avoid even greater damage, the escaped service train was directed to a construction train in front of Thun.

On April 28, 2006, two multiple- controlled BLS Re 465 locomotives collided on a shunting run in Thun station with an ICE 1 operated by Deutsche Bahn , which was on its way from Interlaken to Berlin . Eight people were slightly injured and there was major property damage.

On May 20, 2016, an ICE 1 , which was traveling as ICE 371 from Berlin Südkreuz to Interlaken Ost, collided with an Austrian coach between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost at the Brienzstrasse level crossing. 17 people in the car were injured.
