The Re 465 is an electric, four-axle universal locomotive with converter technology procured by the BLS Lötschbergbahn . It is a variant of the Re 460 of the SBB and belongs to the Lok 2000 family.
technology
The Re 465 represent a further development of the Re 460. Like this, it has GTO thyristors as converters and three-phase asynchronous motors . The difference lies in the converter system. In contrast to the Re 460, which is equipped with one converter per bogie, the Re 465 has one converter per wheelset. In this way, a skidding axis can be brought back to normal operation more quickly and more effectively. In addition, the Re 465 has six-pole asynchronous travel motors (Re 460: four-pole asynchronous motors). This results in an increased continuous output of 6270 kW compared to the Re 460 (hourly output of 7000 kW).
The wheel sets in the bogie adjust radially to the curve of the track.
In addition, in contrast to the Re 460, the Re 465 is equipped with the multiple control of the IIId system and (with transition cable) BLS / BBC . This allows multiple control, for example with Re 4/4 II , Re 4/4 III , Re 6/6 , Re 425 or Ae 415 .
It is planned to refit the locomotives between 2020 and 2022. This includes, among other things, the installation of the multiple control system ZMS for freight traffic with Traxx and Vectron locomotives and ETB (Ethernet Train Backbone) for car loading on the Lötschberg. The boxes will be refurbished and repainted in light BLS lime green with a blue logo. The work will be carried out by BLS in its own workshop in Bönigen, at a cost of 18 million francs.
history
After the teething problems with the Re 460 had been resolved, the Re 465 were successful designs. Thanks to them, the Swiss consortium SLM / ABB won tenders for high-performance locomotives in Norway ( NSB El 18 ), Finland ( VR series Sr2 ) and Hong Kong ( KCRC TLN / TLS ).
After the initial BLS order for eight machines (001–008), another ten locomotives should be ordered for the BLS portion of the piggyback corridor. For financial reasons, the federal government commissioned SBB to procure ten machines (009–018) and rent them to BLS. The locomotives therefore appeared in the BLS design from the start and were also maintained in the Spiez workshop. In 2003 the locomotives were bought by BLS AG . The Re 465 can be found both in freight traffic and in passenger traffic, initially with a standard car (EW) IV , since 2004 mostly with EW III pendulum trains; occasionally also shuttle trains with EW I / II .
From December 2013 to December 2017, locomotives 015–018 were leased to Railcare .
Accidents
On April 28, 2006 at 6:31 a.m., an ICE 1 multiple unit coming from Interlaken collided with two BLS AG locomotives in front of the entry point at Thun station. The two vehicles of the Re 465 series (465 014 and 465 017) were used as a shunting movement and were supposed to take over a freight train. The investigation of the accident showed that the engine driver was surprised by a shunting signal ( dwarf signal ) that was on "Stop" . Despite the immediate emergency braking (from 29 km / h), the vehicles slipped through the clearance profile of the ICE route at 9 km / h . Immediately afterwards, the two locomotives collided with the ICE, which was still 56 km / h, and which had also initiated rapid braking. The locomotives were catapulted back about 63 meters and several ICE wagons derailed.
The accident can also be attributed to the fact that the dispatcher in charge had disregarded a service regulation and only showed the last of three dwarf signals "Stop", while the first signaled "Drive" and the middle signal "Drive with caution". Normally, however, the last two dwarf signals must be on "Stop" before a train route.
30 passengers and the driver of the ICE were slightly injured in the accident. The engine driver of the two Re 465 was able to get to safety in time by jumping out of the driver's cab. Property damage to the two Re 465s totaled just under 3.5 million CHF, the ICE approx. 10 million euros and the infrastructure almost 800,000 CHF. Both locomotives have been repaired and are back on schedule, as is the ICE.
Baptismal name
The BLS baptized the Re 465 after tourist destinations and mountains in Switzerland, although the reference was not always clear. It was later moved away from the baptisms on Eurotunnel or Spalenberg . With the advertising locomotives 465 004 and 008, the new names are now related to advertising.

advertising
The Re 465 were and are also used for full or partial advertising, partly as self-promotion. The locomotives rented to Railcare also had a special paint. The last entry corresponds to the current color scheme.
