BLS AlpTransit

The BLS AlpTransit AG ( BLS AT ) was a subsidiary of BLS AG , based in Thun and branch offices in Frutigen , Blausee-Mitholz and Steg VS . It was renamed BLS Netz AG in 2009 .

history

On February 19, 1993, the Board of Directors of BLS decided to found the company as a wholly owned subsidiary. The company was founded on June 8, 1993 with share capital of 100,000 francs. The purpose of the company was to build the Lötschberg axis as the western part of the new railway through the Alps .

On September 1, 1993, the company was given responsibility for building owners by the federal government. The submission of two exploratory tunnels followed on October 4th of the same year, and on December 8th an agreement was signed between the federal government and BLS for the construction of the Lötschberg tunnel. On February 28, 1994, the company submitted the preliminary project for the Lötschberg base tunnel to the Federal Office of Transport.

On January 1, 2000, the company relocated from Bern to Thun.

33 people took care of studies, planning, tendering processes, awarding of contracts, construction supervision and public relations work in connection with the project planning and construction of the Lötschberg base tunnel and its access routes, for example the Engstlige opencast tunnel near Frutigen and the Raron bridges in front of the south portal. The company was led by Peter Teuscher .

As the client , the company was responsible to the federal government for compliance with deadlines and budgets . It fulfilled this purpose with the commissioning of the tunnel in 2007.

The federal government had financed the base tunnel, and the financing of the rest of the BLS infrastructure was now largely based on federal funds, which is why it demanded that the infrastructure property be transferred to a company that was majority owned by it. For this purpose, BLS Alp Transit was renamed BLS Netz AG and loans from the federal government and the canton of Bern were converted into equity, which gave the federal government the majority of shares. In addition to the base tunnel, which is already owned by this company, the entire remaining infrastructure of the parent company BLS AG , the majority of which is owned by the Canton of Bern , has also been transferred to BLS Netz AG.

Mitholz tunnel

In July 2006, BLS AlpTransit AG was accused of illegally depositing sludge on the Mitholz landfill and obliged to pay 7 million Swiss francs to the canton of Bern . The new Mitholz avalanche protection tunnel had to be closed to all traffic two years after its opening because it threatened to collapse. Apparently the pressure of the tunnel excavation deposited above was too high.
