Branch Railway infrastructure

The BLS Netz AG (BLSN) is a Swiss infrastructure operator based in Bern . With a track length of 440 km, it is the largest private railway in Switzerland . It was entered in the commercial register on July 1, 1993 under the name BLS Alp Transit AG . As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Bernese Alpine Railway Company at that time , its purpose was to “build a new line with a base tunnel from the Frutigen / Heustrich area to the Gampel / Steg / Raron / Mundbach area in accordance with a federal decision of October 4, 1991. "

Since the double lane of the Lötschberg mountain route and the Lötschberg base tunnel were largely financed by the federal government, but BLS AG is majority owned by the canton of Bern , the federal government demanded that the railway infrastructure be outsourced to a company in which it could hold the majority .

In order to achieve the target set by the federal government, BLS Alp Transit AG was renamed BLS Netz AG (BLSN) in April 2009. At the same time, BLSN took over the assets and liabilities of the entire railway infrastructure with an investment value of 3.64 billion Swiss francs from BLS AG . In a second step, conditionally repayable loans from the federal government and canton were converted into equity in such a way that 50.1% of the shares are owned by the federal government, 33.4% by BLS AG and 16.5% by the Canton of Bern. At the same time, BLS AG was assured by the two other shareholders that uniform management within the BLS Group would be guaranteed.

The construction and operation of the BLS network has been running retrospectively since January 1, 2009 for the account of the BLSN. It is the holder of the railway infrastructure concession. It covers its expenses and capital expenditures mainly through the proceeds from the use of the infrastructure (train path price) and the payments and loans from the public sector (federal government and, until 2015, the cantons of Bern, Solothurn, Lucerne, Friborg and Neuchâtel).

The BLSN does not have its own staff. This is provided by BLS AG for all functions via an operating contract. Personnel who work exclusively for the infrastructure will therefore continue to be employed by BLS AG.
