Kandergrund is a municipality in the Frutigen-Niedersimmental administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

geography

Kandergrund is located in the Kandertal . It is an elongated, scattered settlement with the farmers Innerkandergrund, Reckental, Ausser- and Inner-Rüteni and Blausee-Mitholz.

history

Kandergrund lies in the bottom of the Kander valley . The name Kander could come from the Celtic word kandara (the shiny, the white).

Political development

Kandergrund belonged to the municipality of Frutigen until 1850 . In 1908 the Kandergrund community separated into Kandergrund and Kandersteg . The original municipal area of 16,665 hectares fell to Kandergrund with 3207 hectares and Kandersteg with 13,458 hectares.

Coal mines

During the Second World War , three coal mines were operated in Kandergrund . The “Lindi” mine of Kander-Kohlen AG, the “Horn” mine of the mining company Kandergrund AG and the “Schlafegg” mine of the Schlafegg AG mine.

Up to 100 men worked in the “Schlafegg” mine, the monthly production was up to 700 t and was loaded into railcars at Kandergrund station (on the Lötschberg mountain line ). The coal was transported to Basel , for the chemical plant Ciba AG , and to Aarberg for the local sugar factory . In 1949, competition from Ruhrkohle made mining in Kandergrund no longer profitable. The last mine to be shut down was "Horn" on November 15, 1949.

Explosion of an ammunition magazine

On December 19, 1947 at 11:34 p.m., a federal ammunition magazine exploded in Mitholz. Nine people were killed and many buildings were destroyed, including the BLS - Station . The damage totaled 100 million francs. Some house inscriptions referring to the explosion can still be read on buildings today.

On February 25, 2020, it became known that the around 170 residents of Mitholz would have to leave their homes for at least 10 years so that the ammunition still stored in the mountain can be cleared. The actual eviction should begin in 2031.
