The TLN 001 ( Through train Locomotive North ) and TLS 002 ( Through train Locomotive South ) are two electric locomotives for the Kowloon-Canton Railways Corporation (KCRC) in Hong Kong .
prehistory
After the Swiss consortium SLM / ABB had succeeded in developing extremely modern locomotives with the SBB Re 460 and the BLS Re 465 , it won the 1997 tender for two new, identical high-performance locomotives . Outwardly, they differ from their conspecifics, the Re 460, the Re 465, the NSB El 18 and the VR series Sr2 , in the overall length: Instead of 18500 mm, they are 18696 mm because they are equipped with automatic couplings. They are designed for a speed of 160 km / h and were procured for use with a single double-decker train between Kowloon , Hong Kong and Guangzhou . The original plan was to use the locomotives in front of container trains during night-time storage.
delivery
The schedule was very tight because the job had to be completed before Hong Kong was handed over to China . On April 10 and 11, 1997, they were able to leave the production facility in Zurich-Oerlikon. They were towed to Basel on the same day by an SBB Re 4/4 II and an SBB Ae 6/6 . The TLN and TLS contain automatic couplings, which are not compatible with the couplings of the SBB locomotives. As a result, they were not braked while being towed and the speed was not allowed to exceed 80 km / h. In the port of Birsfelden the vehicles were reloaded onto a container ship . The transport took place on the Rhine to Rotterdam . From there they were transported on a ship through the Nieuwe Waterweg and then by sea to Hong Kong. The transport took about a month.
commitment
The locomotives are used exclusively together with twelve double-decker cars supplied by Kinki Sharyo (Japan) as Ktt (KCRC Through Train), with one locomotive working at the front and the other at the rear of the train . The luxuriously equipped train holds 1268 passengers in two car classes (two Premium Class cars with 2 + 1 seating and ten First Class cars with 2 + 2 seating) and is used exclusively for high-quality commuter traffic between Kowloon (Hung Hom station) and Guangzhou (East) without Stop on the move.
