The El 18 is an electric locomotive owned by the Norges Statsbaner (NSB).
history
After an international tender by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), a consortium made up of the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) , ABB Verkehrssysteme AG in Zurich and ABB Strømmens Værksted in Norway received the order for 22 new universal locomotives in September 1994 . With the SBB Re 460 series, SLM and ABB had already developed a modern and successful locomotive that also aroused interest outside of Switzerland.
The SBB 460 055 and 460 066 locomotives came to Norway for half a year. They were lined up in freight trains and dragged through Germany. In Norway, they were given a snow plow on both fronts and provided regular services to freight and passenger trains. In view of the lack of locomotives during the sporting events in Lillehammer, they were happy about the two additional locomotives. The 460 055 was given the name Lillehammer and the 460 066 has been called Finse since its use in Norway . ABB Verkehrssysteme AG used the climatic chamber to test the Re 460 series for its suitability for cold temperatures - in Norway it can get as low as −50 ° C.
construction
The El 18 has a slightly lower performance than the Re 460 series, but it has additional facilities for operation in arctic temperatures, as can occur in Norway. The electrical part essentially corresponds to the BLS Re 465 .
particularities
The locomotive is set up for an external supply of the locomotive heating system on the local network basis of 400 V with 50 Hz. Therefore a parking position with a lowered's bracket possible.
As a convenience feature, the locomotives in the air-conditioned driver's cab have a refrigerator and a hotplate for making coffee.
A special feature worth mentioning is the hunting rifle , which used to be carried on Norwegian locomotives, especially in the province of Nordland , in order to be able to rescue injured animals quickly in the event of a game accident (especially with reindeer and elk ). Tightening of the gun laws resulted in a creeping end to this practice, which led to criticism from animal welfare.
operation area
Although it is built as a universal locomotive, it is mainly used in high-quality passenger train service. It can be found above all before long-distance trains with conventional rolling stock. On the Oslo – Kristiansand – Stavanger ( Sørlandsbanen ), Oslo – Bergen ( Bergen Railway ) and Oslo – Trondheim ( Dovre Railway ) routes, some of these trains have been displaced a little by the use of NSB Type 73 multiple units . However, the El 18 is indispensable for night trains. In addition, trains are hauled during rush hour on the Oslo – Halden ( Østfoldbanen ) and Oslo – Skien ( Vestfoldbanen ) routes .
El 18 has been used on the Flåm Railway as a replacement for the El 17 since 2015. During the summer season, the trains are driven with an El 18 at the front and rear, as no suitable control car is available.
Accidents
Locomotives of the class El 18 have already been involved in several serious accidents. One driver's cab each had to be completely replaced on El 18 2253 and 2261.
