The Kowloon-Canton Railway , short KCR ( Chinese  九 廣 鐵路  /  九 广 铁路 , Pinyin Jiǔ Guǎng Tiělù , Jyutping Gau 2 Gwong 1 Tit 3 lou 6 , short 九 鐵  /  九 铁 , Jiǔiě , Jyutping Gau 2 tit 3  - "Kowloon -Canton Railway ”), is the oldest and most important railway network in Hong Kong , China . Historically, the station of the “Kowloon Canton Railway” was located at the Clock Tower of Tsim Sha Tsui in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula of Hong Kong. Today, the KCR station is located in the Hung Hom district of Kowloon-East near the Cross Harbor Tunnel (CHT). Since the merger of the networks between the subway -Unternehmen MTR Corporation and the railway companies Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation on December 1, 2007 it is now considered part of the Mass Transit Railway operated -Netzes.

The first part of the line opened in 1910 and connected Kowloon in Hong Kong with Canton (now Guangzhou) in mainland China . The foundation stone for the terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong was laid in 1913 . The KCR train station officially started operating in 1916 . Despite protests , it was demolished in the 1970s, with the exception of the Clock Tower , which has been a listed building since 1990 . After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 , the part of the railway line that was outside the Crown Colony of Hong Kong was expropriated . The then remaining British part of the railway is now the East Rail Line .

Incidents
  • On April 20, 1931, a railway embankment, which had been washed away after heavy rains, collapsed when a train to Kowloon ran over it. The cars crashed nine meters. More than 30 people died and 20 to 30 were seriously injured.
  • After an explosion in a passenger car on January 17, 1937 near Shitan ( 石 灘鎮  /  石 滩镇  - “literally large community stony beach or rocky beach”), the last wagons of a moving train caught fire. 112 people died.
  • On January 16, 1938, fire broke out in the second carriage of an express train. It was later arson suspected. As in the accident a year earlier, the train was neither equipped with an emergency brake nor with a signaling device that was accessible to passengers. The car itself and two neighboring cars burned out. 87 people died and 30 were also injured.

In 2007 the KCR lines were integrated into the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). The MTR Corporation operates the KCR railway network infrastructure for an initial 50 years, which however remained in the possession of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, KCRC for short ( 九 廣 鐵路 公司  /  九 广 铁路 公司 , 九 鐵 公司  /  九 铁 公司 for short ). The KCRC, in turn, is owned by the Hong Kong government. As part of the planned merger, KCR East Rail , KCR West Rail and KCR Ma On Shan Rail were renamed East Rail Line , West Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line . The Mong Kok Station on the East Rail was renamed Mong Kok East Station .

The KCR operates light rail traffic, the Light Rail Transit , LRT for short, locally mostly colloquially known as Light Rail ( 輕 鐵  /  轻 铁  - "light rail traffic"), on the lines between Tuen Mun and Yuen Long in the New Territories . In long-distance rail traffic, there are intercity and high-speed trains to Beijing , Shanghai , Guangzhou and Zhaoqing , which run via the KCR station Hung Hom and, since September 2018, also via the KCR station in West Kowloon (WKS). In addition, the KCR also has its own diesel locomotives , which are used for freight traffic between mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
