The Clock Tower ( Chinese  鐘樓  /  钟楼  - "clock tower") on the coast of Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) on the Kowloon Peninsula is one of the landmarks of Hong Kong and the only remnant of the former "Kowloon Station", a station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway from the beginning of the 20th century. It is located on the northern edge of Victoria Harbor and on the southern bank of Tsim Sha Tsui. The clock tower is officially known as the Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower ( 前 九 廣 鐵路 鐘樓 ), but is usually called the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower ( 尖沙咀 鐘樓 ) by locals after its location .

Architecture and history

The tower, made of red brick and granite, is 44 m high; a lightning rod on the roof is also 7 m high. Originally the tower only had one clock, three more were added later and switched to electrical operation; the final installation took place in March 1921.

Construction of the station began in 1913, the tower was completed in 1915 (the end station in 1916). After a new train station went into operation in the 1970s, the demolition of the old train station began - despite numerous protests, including from monument protection organizations - only the tower remained in its place.

Cultural monument

Since July 1990, the tower has been on the list of cultural monuments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (with the reference number 43)
