Despite the name correspondence with the district of Hung Hom ( 紅 磡  /  红 磡 ) in the southeast of Kowloon, this train station got its name from the former "Hung Hom Bay" ( 紅 磡 灣  /  红 磡 湾 , English Hung Hom Bay ), which was due to various land reclamation projects in the coastal area has disappeared from the Hong Kong map over time.

history

After the long post- war economic boom in Hong Kong in the first half of the 20th century , the old Kowloon Station on the peninsula in the Tsimshatsui district became too small. In addition, there was no space or opportunity to expand this station in the densely populated city. The new station opened on November 30, 1975 under the new name of the Kowloon-Canton Railway . The demolition of the old station began on June 7, 1978. The Hong Kong Cultural Center - a complex with a concert hall and museums - opened on the square . The old clock tower of the station was preserved as a memorial.

The new station was renamed Hung Hom Station in 1996 . In connection with this, the Kowloon-Canton Railway was renamed the East Rail Line .

From 2001 the Hung Hom Station was expanded. The new buildings included a new passenger terminal with restaurants, shops and ticket offices inside.

For a long time the station was a terminus . That changed with the expansion of the East Rail to East Tsim Sha Tsui station . The status changed again on August 16, 2009. Since then, East Tsim Sha Tsui station has been part of the West Rail Line. As a result, the Hung Hom station became a terminus again.
