Hung Hom ( Chinese  紅 磡  /  红 磡 , Pinyin Hóngkàn , Jyutping Hung 4 Ham 3  - "Red Cliff"; historically also Hongham ) is a district of Hong Kong in the southeast of the Kowloon Peninsula . Administratively it belongs to the Kowloon City District .

In 1860 parts of Kowloons fell to Great Britain under the Beijing Convention . In the following years, various industrial and trading companies settled in the area of ​​Hung Hom. 1866 as the "Hung Hom Bay" ( 紅磡灣  /  红磡湾 , Hóngkàn Wān , Jyutping Hung 4 ham 3 Waan 6 , English Hung Hom Bay ) not by land reclamation was gone, here was shipyard Hong Kong Whampoa Dock Company founded . From 1867 to 1870, half of the agricultural land had given way to industry. In December 1884 there were two devastating fires in the region, which destroyed large parts of the settlement. After the fires, official street names were given for the first time and the land was auctioned off by the government. In 1898, the Green Island Cement Company relocated production from Macau to Hung Hom.

Attractions

Two temples deserve special mention: The Buddhist Kwun Yam Temple ( 觀音 廟 ) was built in 1873 in honor of the Bodhisattva deity Kwun Yam ( Guānyīn ). The bell and some panels date from this time, whereas the main entrance was renovated in 1889.

A second temple is the Taoist deity Pak Tai - in standard Chinese Beidi - dedicated ( 北帝古廟 ) and was built 1929th It replaces a previous building from 1876, which was in a different location. Both buildings are protected as Grade II and Grade III Historic Buildings by the Hong Kong Monument Authority.

Institutions

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has its 9.5 hectare main campus with more than 20 buildings in Hung Hom. The Hong Kong Coliseum is also located here , a multifunctional event center where concerts and sporting events (e.g. the 1992 Futsal World Cup and the 2002 Volleyball World Grand Prix ) take place. From 1980 to 2014, the Hong Kong Post International Mail Center was located in western Hung Hom.

In Hung Hom, the Whampoa MTR stations , the terminus of the Kwun Tong Line , and Ho Man Tin are on the same line. Hung Hom train station , which is originally named after the former bay of the same name, is barely in the area of ​​Hung Hom . It is located on the Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong and Beijing – Hong Kong high-speed lines . It is also the terminus of the two MTR lines West Rail Line (to Tuen Mun ) and East Rail Line (to Lok Ma Chau and Lo Wu ).

The company New World First Ferry operates a ferry line from Hung Hom to North Point . The journey takes around eight minutes and is offered around every 30 minutes during the day. Until March 2011 there were also ferry connections from Star Ferry to Central and Wan Chai .

The city highways 1 and 5 pass through the area in north-south and east-west direction. The Cross-Harbor Tunnel (CHT) under Victoria Harbor has been connecting Kowloon with Hong Kong Island since 1972 . The north entrance ("north portal") is in Hung Hom. Therefore, local citizens of the city like to call the CHT underwater tunnel colloquially as the “Hunghom tunnel” (“ 紅 隧 ”).
