Underwater tunnel
An underwater tunnel is a tunnel under a river or a strait and can be built as a (more expensive) alternative to a bridge. The construction of underwater tunnels often takes place when crossing waterways, which are used by large ships, since underwater tunnels do not limit the passage height for ship traffic. For railways in particular, underwater tunnels with a flat topography are a suitable alternative to a high bridge, because they allow a low-gradient route.
