The Kennedy Tunnel is a combined railway , motorway and bicycle tunnel in the south of the Belgian city ​​of Antwerp . The tube for rail traffic is approx. 1200 meters long, the tubes for the motorway approx. 700 meters. It runs below the Scheldt . The tunnel is part of the Antwerp motorway ring R2 , which has not yet been completely completed. It was opened to road traffic on May 31, 1969. The railway tunnel of the same name running directly below it was opened on February 1, 1970. It was built for the railway line from Antwerp to Ghent . It is named after the American President John F. Kennedy .

The tunnel consists of two tubes, each of which houses three lanes . The tubes are 14.25 meters wide. A four-meter-wide tube for bicycle traffic runs along the outer sides. The railway tunnel is about 10 meters below the road tunnel and is 10.50 meters wide. The maximum speed is 90 km / h, with a limit of 70 km / h for freight trains from the direction of Ghent that operate in braking position G.
