The Oslofjordtunnel ( Norwegian : Oslofjordtunnelen ) is an underwater road tunnel under the Oslofjord in Norway . With a length of 7230 meters, the tunnel is the third longest underwater tunnel in Norway after the Eiksund tunnel in Møre og Romsdal and the Bømlafjord tunnel in Vestland . At its deepest point, the Oslofjord Tunnel is 134 meters below sea level. It is part of the main road Riksvei 23, which connects the two former Fylker Akershus and Buskerud (now both Viken ) and replaces the ferry between Drøbak in the municipality of Frogn and Storsand in Asker . Construction of the three-lane tunnel began in 1997. When it was opened three years later on June 29, 2000 by the Norwegian King Harald V , the Oslofjord Tunnel was the longest underwater tunnel in Europe at the time.

The tunnel was financed by tolls . The two former Fylker Akershus and Buskerud held a 50% stake in the Oslofjordtunnelen AS toll company, which was founded on August 21, 1996 . The company raised money to finance the construction of the Oslofjord connection (Oslofjordforbindelsen) from Bjørnstad in Asker to Vassum in Frogn. The 26.7 km long section of Riksvei 23 (Rv23 for short) includes five more tunnels and some bridges and connects European route 6 with Riksvei 282 , which is connected to the E 18 at Drammen . After paying off the project, which cost 1.3 billion Norwegian kroner , the tunnel has been toll-free since 2016.
