Opening ceremony of the Eiksund tunnel

The Eiksund tunnel is an underwater tunnel in Norway and, as part of the Eiksund connection (Eiksundsambandet), connects the island communities of Hareid , Ulstein , Sande and Herøy with the mainland in Fylke Møre og Romsdal as part of Riksvei 653.

The tunnel is 7,765 m long and with a depth of 287 m above sea level is currently the deepest road tunnel in the world. The greatest gradient in the tunnel is 9.6%.

In addition to the Eiksund tunnel, the Eiksundsambandet also consists of the Eiksundbrua (405 m), the Helgehorn tunnel (1160 m) and the Morkaås tunnel (630 m)

The Eiksund tunnel was opened to the public on February 17, 2008 and opened to normal vehicle traffic on February 23, 2008. The Eiksund-Rjåneset ferry service, which will be replaced by the Eiksund tunnel, will also be closed.

The construction costs were financed by taxpayers' money and amounted to approximately 800 million Norwegian kroner. This corresponds to around EUR 93 million.

The toll for the Eiksundsambandet was 76 kroner (2012) for a car up to 3.5 tons , which corresponds to about 10 EUR (September 2012) . The vehicle license plates were recorded with cameras when entering the tunnel, which enabled the vehicle owner to be identified, to whom the toll was then billed. It was also possible to pay the toll within three days at certain petrol stations in the area. This detection system made it possible to drive through the Eiksundsamband without stopping.

Due to the good occupancy rate, the construction costs were already covered by the toll income in summer 2014. The Eiksundsamband has been toll-free since June 14, 2014.

On June 28, 2009, a car accident occurred in the tunnel that left five dead.
