The Transbay Tube is a section of the BART transport system that crosses the San Francisco Bay between Oakland and San Francisco . The tube starts at Embarcadero Station in San Francisco and ends at West Oakland Station; the total length between the two stations is 9 kilometers. The underwater length is 5.7 kilometers. This makes the tube the longest underwater crossing of an underground train in the world. The deepest point is 41 meters.
The Transbay Tube is the loudest section of the BART with up to 100 dB . In 2015 the rails were sanded, which should have reduced the noise a bit.
Construction of the tube began in 1965 and was opened to traffic in 1974. The tube was built on land from 57 individual segments according to the caisson principle . These segments were then brought into position with the help of a barge , sunk and weighted down with sand and gravel.
