Archea Olymbia ( pronunciation : [ arˈçɛa ɔlimˈbia ], Greek Αρχαία Ολυμπία ( f. Sg. ), Also Archea Olympia, translated 'Ancient Olympia') is a village in the Peloponnese in the immediate vicinity of ancient Olympia and a municipality in the Greek region West Greece .

The place Archea Olymbia is located near the Altis, the site of the ancient Olympic Games , in a hilly, to the east mountainous and largely forested landscape. However, the forest fires in August 2007 , which threatened to plague the ancient sites, severely decimated the forest.

The river Alfios , into which the Kladeos flows at Olympia , is dammed to a small reservoir southwest of the place.

The community reaches far to the north in the mountain ranges of the Foloi and the Lambia . It borders on the east with the municipality of Gortynia in the Peloponnese region and further clockwise (starting in the south) with the municipalities of Andritsena-Krestena , Pyrgos , Ilida , Erymanthos and Kalavryta .

Archea Olymbia is a small place that is largely shaped by tourism, which is attracted by the nearby ancient sites. Numerous restaurants, cafes, hotels, travel agencies and souvenir shops are lined up along the main street and the few small side streets.

Olympia train station

300 meters east of the town center is the small train station, built in a classical style. Via the national road 74, which connects to the 5 Antirrio - Ioannina motorway at Pyrgos, about 20 km away , Olymbia is connected to the Greek highway network.

Attractions

The modern place itself offers little worth seeing.

In the classical building, which formerly housed the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games , which deals with the ancient games , is now housed in a new building . There is also a museum of the modern Olympic Games in the village , which gives an overview of the recent games up to and including 1906 and shows, among other things, medals and Olympic torches as well as a unique stamp collection on the theme of the Olympic Games.

A little to the east of the village, a memorial column for the founder of the Olympic Games of the modern age , Baron Pierre de Coubertin, is erected in a small grove , in which his heart is buried.

The philosopher Panajotis Kondylis was born in the city in 1943 .

Administrative division

Archea Olymbia was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1912 and raised to an urban community (dimos) in 1942 . In 1997 numerous villages in the area were incorporated. The congregation experienced a further expansion in 2010, when three more congregations in Archea Olymbia were dissolved. The municipalities up to 2010 have since formed four municipal districts, which are divided into 41 local communities, which correspond to the municipalities from the time before 1997 and elect local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
