Zacharo ( Greek Ζαχάρω ( f. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ zaˈxarɔ ]) is a small town in the south of the Greek region of western Greece . The town on the west coast of the Peloponnese on the Ionian Sea has seen strong population growth since the 1980s. The community was recognized as a township (dimos) in 1947 and enlarged several times through incorporations, most recently in 2011 when the neighboring community of Figalia came to Zacharo.

The place is also known for its thermal springs at the Kaiafas lagoon, which were already known in ancient times. The sulfur springs were used, among other things, to treat skin diseases and arthritis . Today, however, the main focus of tourism is on summer tourism along the sandy coastline.

Due to the devastating forest fires in August 2007 , the place gained national fame. Some villages in the community were completely destroyed, over 30 people were killed.

About three kilometers south of Zacharos, near Kakovatos , Wilhelm Dörpfeld researched the remains of three dome graves in 1907 and 1908 and discovered and partially excavated an associated settlement from the early Mycenaean period. From 2009 to 2011, further excavations of the settlement were carried out by classical archaeologists from the University of Freiburg .

Community structure

Since 2011, Zacharo has been divided into two municipal districts and 26 local units, of which only the small town of Zacharo has the status of a municipal district. You and the 25 local communities elect local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.

Zacharo is on the national road 9 or on the European route 55 between Pyrgos and Kalamata . Zacharo Station is also on the meter-gauge railway line from Patras via Pyrgos to Kyparissia and Kalamata.

Trivia

The place Zacharo became known nationwide through the 2006 film Sugar Town (Greek Οι γαμπρόι I gambri The Grooms) directed by Kimon Tsakiris. The film shows the attempt of the mayor of Zacharo to help the unmarried men of the village to find a wife. To this end, he made contact with the mayor of the Russian city of Klin, traveled to Russia with 10 men willing to marry and invited women from Russia to a return visit. The film was u. a. shown at arte in March 2007 .
