Pinios ( Greek Πηνειός ( m. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ piˈnjɔs ]) is a municipality in the west of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula around the municipality seat Gastouni . It was formed on January 1, 2011 from the municipalities of Gastouni, Vartholomio and Tragano and named after the Pinios river , which flows into the Ionian Sea in the municipality's area . With 7,485 inhabitants, around one third of the community's population lives in the city of Gastouni.
Pinios lies in the alluvial land of the river of the same name and covers the southern half of the Kyllini peninsula to the west. The approximately 20 km long coastline consists of sandy beaches, at its northwestern end in front of a rocky cape in a small bay is the place Arkoudi as the only larger settlement on the coast. The cities of Vartholomio and Gastouni are about 5 km from the coast at a distance of four kilometers. On the northern bank of the Pinios, the municipality of Tragano extends up to about 25 km eastwards into the hilly interior. Neighboring communities are Andravida-Kyllini to the north and Ilida to the south.
