Vartholomio ( Greek Βαρθολομιό ( n. Sg. )) Is a small town on the Kyllini peninsula in the east of the Peloponnese peninsula on the right lower reaches of the Pinios river , which flows into the Ionian Sea east of the area of Vatholomio .
The place was originally named Valtochori (Βαλτοχώρι, swamp village ') and Vatrachochori (Βατραχοχώρι, frog village'), a reference to the swamps in the Pinios Valley. The current name is said to go back to a knight of the Franks who ruled from 1204 to 1430, named Bartholomé or Barthélémy II. Guise , initially graced as Vartholomeo (Βαρθολομαίο).
During the Greek Revolution , on November 10, 1825, Vartholomio was the scene of a battle between the Greek people who fled to the fortress of Chlemoutsi against the troops of the Egyptian general Ibrahim Pasha , who conquered the area and ruled it cruelly for several years. Only after the Battle of Navarino in 1827 was Vartholomio finally liberated and part of the newly founded Greece.
In 1988, Vartholomio was the epicenter of a major earthquake.
Vartoholomio has some beautiful beaches, such as Thines and Arkoudi, on the border with Kastro-Kyllini. The pine forest of Thines is a recreational destination. The city folklore museum, founded in 2000, collects evidence and memorabilia from the history of the community such as costumes, interiors and tools. You can also visit a monastery of St. Eleousa.
Administrative division
Vartholomio was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1912 and elevated to an urban community (dimos) in 1989 . In the following years, numerous villages in the area were incorporated. When it was incorporated into the newly created municipality of Pinios on January 1, 2011, Vartholomio became one of its four municipal districts.
