The Rendsburg Canal Tunnel is a 640 meter long four-lane underwater tunnel with two tubes under the Kiel Canal . It leads the federal highway 77 from Rendsburg in the north to Westerrönfeld in the south of the canal. A pedestrian tunnel was completed in 1965, halfway between the road tunnel and the high bridge .

history

Construction work on the Rendsburg Canal Tunnel began on November 23, 1957. The tunnel replaced the second of the Rendsburg swing bridges and was inaugurated on July 25, 1961. The swing bridge over the canal was shut down at 2:07 p.m. on the same day.

In the middle of the tunnel, the lanes are 20 m below the water level. The middle section of the tunnel with a length of 140 m was created lying in a construction pit south of the canal. This excavation is now used as an outdoor swimming pool for the municipality of Westerrönfeld.

On March 17, 1959, the middle section was floated into position and lowered into the channel dredged into the canal floor. During the work, the canal was closed to shipping for 70 hours and opened again at 3 a.m. on March 20.

Redevelopment

The renovation of the tunnel began in summer 2011. The east tube was closed from summer 2012. According to initial plans, work on both tubes should be completed by the end of 2013 and cost € 25 million. The sewer authority is now reckoning with € 64 million. Due to difficulties with the cabling of the operating and system technology, the east tube was only released on October 1, 2016.

The renovation of the west tunnel began at the end of January 2017. The entire tunnel renovation is expected to be completed at the end of 2020 in time for the start of construction work to replace the Rader high bridge .

Pedestrian tunnel

As a further replacement for the swing bridge, a pedestrian tunnel was built 550 m east of the road tunnel using shield driving between 1962 and 1965 .

The actual tunnel tube is 131 m long, the difference in height of approx. 28 m from the ground level is overcome with two escalators of 55.9 m each (travel time two minutes) and an elevator on each side of the canal. At the time, these escalators were the longest in Europe.
