First Coentunnel

The tunnel got its name from the nearby port of Coenhaven , named after the Dutch colonizer Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587–1629).

Construction began in 1961 at a cost of 45 million guilders . The opening of the 1283 meter long tunnel took place on June 21, 1966.
The Hempont ship ferry was the most important connection in the north until the 1960s; around 5,800 cars were transported daily. Today the ferry is mainly used for bicycle traffic and for the transport of dangerous chemicals that are not allowed to be transported through the tunnel. In 1989, 100,000 vehicles drove through the Coentunnel every day, which resulted in more and more traffic problems.

Second Coen Tunnel

Since the first Coentunnel was no longer sufficient for the ever increasing car traffic, construction of the second tunnel began in spring 2009. The estimated construction costs were estimated at 2.1 billion euros .

Cartoon

In 2012 the second tunnel should be ready for traffic. It was built next to the first Coentunnel and was created together with a new motorway, De Westrandweg , an extension of the Rijksweg 5 motorway . The actual commissioning was on May 13, 2013
