Dimitrios Kolymbas

Dimitrios Kolymbas (born January 1, 1949 in Athens ) was Professor of Geotechnics and Tunneling at the University of Innsbruck from 1994 to 2017 .

Kolymbas attended the German School in Athens and from 1966 studied civil engineering in Karlsruhe as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service. From 1972 he was a scientific assistant at the Institute for Soil and Rock Mechanics, where he earned his doctorate with distinction in 1978 under Gerd Gudehus ( A non-linear viscoplastic material law for soils ). After military service in Greece, he returned to the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1980 , became chief engineer at the Chair of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (Gerd Gudehus) in 1982 and completed his habilitation there in 1988 ( A constitutive theory for soils and other granular substances ).

Kolymbas initiated the theory of hypoplasticity. This is a new mathematical framework for the mechanical behavior of soil. Hypoplasticity is not based on the theory of elastoplasticity, but is an application of the principles of so-called rational mechanics according to Clifford Truesdell and Walter Noll .

In recent years Kolymbas has been working on barodesia, which is a further development of hypoplasticity and is based on asymptotic properties of the soil.

Kolymbas made contributions to the formation of shear joints, tunnel construction, dynamic pile testing and anisotropic elasticity and has campaigned for bridges between disciplines (geotechnics-mathematics, tunneling mechanics, fractals in geotechnics) and between countries (contacts to Germany, Italy and Russia ) .

Since his retirement in 2017 he has dedicated himself to research (mainly in the field of barodesy) and music (he is chairman of the Innsbruck University Choir and president of the Angelinis-Hadjinikou Foundation in Greece).
