Walter Noll (born January 7, 1925 in Berlin ; † June 6, 2017 ) was a German -born American applied mathematician who dealt in particular with the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics .

Noll studied mathematics at the TU Berlin from 1946 , but also attended lectures at the FU Berlin and the Humboldt University and in 1949/50 at the University of Paris. In 1951 he acquired the title of graduate engineer in mathematics at the TU Berlin and became a scientific assistant there. In 1953 he went to Indiana University to Clifford Truesdell , where he received his doctorate in applied mathematics in 1954. He then returned to Berlin, but in 1955 he went back to the USA at the University of Southern California and from 1956 as an Associate Professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology , later Carnegie Mellon University . From 1957 his collaboration with Truesdell began on the Non linear field theories of mechanics , which appeared in 1965 as part of the Handbuch der Physik . He became a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and retired in 1993.

He has been visiting professor and visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University (with Truesdell), the University of Karlsruhe , the Israel Institute of Technology, the École Polytechnique in Nancy, the University of Pisa , the University of Pavia and the University of Oxford . He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
