Gerd Gudehus (born July 23, 1938 in Hamburg ) is a German engineering scientist who deals with soil mechanics and foundation engineering.

Life

Gudehus is the son of a civil engineer. He studied at the TU Berlin , where he obtained his diploma in 1962 and received his doctorate under Hans Lorenz . From 1968 he worked with Hans Leussink at the University of Karlsruhe , where he completed his habilitation in 1972 and in 1973 became a full professor of foundation engineering and soil mechanics. From 1973 until his retirement in 2006 he was head of the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Rock Engineering.

One focus of Gudehus' research is basic soil mechanical research with a broad interdisciplinary focus. In Karlsruhe he also led the special research areas of silo structures and preservation of historical structures (under geotechnical aspects), which had existed since the mid-1980s. In the 1990s, his institute also focused on earthquake hazards and geotechnical problems that arose from the recultivation of the post-mining landscape in the former GDR.

In 1991 he received the Max Planck Research Award . In 2006 he became an honorary member of the German Society for Geotechnics (DGGT). He was head of the specialist section for soil mechanics and of the working group security in foundation engineering of the DGGT and chairman of the DIN committee NA civil engineering security in foundation engineering . In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from TH Danzig .
