Ulrich Smoltczyk , actually Hans-Ulrich Smoltczyk , (born October 21, 1928 in Berlin ) is a German civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Smoltczyk studied at the Technical University of Berlin Civil Engineering, where he obtained in 1952 his diploma, 1955 doctorate was ( contribution to the determination of the fine sediment amount hydrograph ) and habilitation ( Determination limited plastic deformations in sand under flat foundation , Ernst and son 1960). In 1965 he became an adjunct professor for theoretical soil mechanics at the TH Stuttgart and from 1969 until his retirement in 1994 he became a full professor for foundation engineering and soil mechanics in Stuttgart. Before that he was an engineer with Philipp Holzmann in Hamburg from 1961 to 1969 . He has now retired from Stuttgart . In 1976 he founded his own engineering office Smoltczyk und Partner in Stuttgart.

Among other things, he dealt with ground failure, shallow foundations, historical foundations. In the 1980s he was involved in the development of the Stuttgart side pressure probe for borehole measurements.

From 1970 he headed the soil mechanics section of the German Society for Earthworks and Foundation Engineering (DGEG, today DGGT), of which he was chairman from 1978 to 1990. In this function he was also the founder (1978) of her journal Geotechnik , which he edited until his retirement. In addition, from 1990 he was Vice President for Europe of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. From the 1980s onwards, he was involved in the formulation of the basic building standards of Eurocode 7 in a leading position.

Until the 6th edition (of which an English-language edition appeared) in 2001, he was the editor of the Grundbau-Taschenbuch (Verlag Ernst und Sohn).

In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the TU Dresden . Among other things, this recognized the fact that he had established connections with universities in Poland (Krakow, Danzig), Prague and eastern Germany (especially Dresden) at an early stage since the late 1970s. In 1999 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
