Main Street Tunnel

The Main Street Tunnel in Welland , Ontario , Canada is an underwater tunnel that runs 27 Niagara Road and the unsigned designation of Highway 7146 under the Welland Canal . It is named as part of East Main Street . The structure was built as part of the Welland By-Pass project. Construction was relatively straightforward as, like the Townline Tunnel, it was built at the same time as the canal over it and with a simple cut and cover.

The Main Street Tunnel, like the nearby Townline Tunnel to the south, was built in the early 1970s as part of the Welland bypass of the Welland Canal . It was built using the cut-and-cover technique, excavating the tunnel, pouring the concrete and re-closing the structure on which the canal was built. In this way costly drilling under an active waterway was avoided. The structure cost C $ 11 million . That price was split between Transport Canada and the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority between 50 and 50. The tunnel opened on the morning of May 20, 1972 with a parade with the Welland Police Pipe Band and various officers.
